Extra Events

A number of extra events have accumulated over the last several years, some occurring before the main convention, and some afterwards. At this point, here's what's shaping up for 2014.

Our Opening Gambit Thursday night at 8pm borrows from the seminar theme of Metamorphosis. The individual storytelling we enjoyed the past two years will transform into a story we all tell. As the story travels around the circle you can continue the story for up to two minutes until you feel like you've gotten it as far as you want, then hand it off to the next person. Your contribution can be as small as one word (and we'll even let you just say "Pass" if you want!). We don't expect the story to be coherent. We don't expect the story to be formally fantastic. We do expect the story, and the storytelling, to be fun. If nobody objects, we might even record it for others to hear later.

Last year we planned a New Members Dinner. So many veterans joined to help them feel welcome that the few who weren't there felt left out. So on Friday night we are making it a Welcome Dinner for all members, new and old. It won't be fancy, but it should be a great way to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

There will be some familiar extras to enjoy. Needle workers, remember to bring your odds and ends for the Second Annual 4th Street Yarn Swap. You'll probably swap patterns and ideas as well. Plan to participate in the Third Annual Auction. There's at least one Tea Party on the agenda.

And there are a few new offerings. If you're anything like the members of our committee, you have an extra book or two lying around: one that you liked, a lot, but don't want to keep any more. You've got a better copy, you've replaced it with an electronic version, you've outgrown it but remember it fondly and know you'll never want to read it again, or you buy up every used copy you can find to give them to your friends. We'd like to set up a Good Book Exchange at 4th Street. This is not a place to dump bad books (though you can include books you just didn't like that others love!). It's also not a place to get rid of a lot of books -- just a few choice volumes. Bring 3 or 4 books, if you want to play; we'll set up a small bookcase, and put the books on it. If you see something you like, take it! And if you want to take your books back at the end of the convention, do that as well. What isn't claimed, we'll either sell or pass on to a charity. At some point during the convention, we'll probably do a guided tour of what's there, so we can point out why stuff is cool and why you might want to take it.

There will be a gathering for Intermediate Writers on Friday night after the dinner. If you're looking for discussion beyond the usual beginner-level advice but you're still chasing that elusive publication street-cred, this might just be the place for you! Come and share resources and tips, have fun, and hang out with people who're in the same boat as you. For more information or to comment, head over to this LiveJournal post.

Also on Friday, gather for an evening of Music. Rumor has it that a few of our favorite contributors will be there, despite smoking regulations. Think of it as singing around the campfire... without the campfire.

At meal breaks throughout the weekend, an Ambassador will meet with anyone looking for dining companions. If you are new and don't know where to start, this is the place. We are fortunate to have a good variety of yummy food within comfortable walking distance. Sharing a meal is a great way to continue the conversations.

On Monday, as a bit of a post-con decompress and feast, a bunch of us wander to have Fish at a sushi shop in St. Paul for lunch followed by a stop over at an ice cream shop.
